Does the Tally XML file work in both TallyPrime and Tally.ERP 9?
Yes — both read the same XML voucher format. Only the menu path differs: TallyPrime uses Gateway of Tally → Import → Vouchers, and Tally.ERP 9 uses Gateway of Tally → Import Data → Vouchers.
The XML voucher format has been stable across both generations of Tally, so one exported file imports into either without conversion. This matters for accounting practices, where some clients have moved to TallyPrime and others are still on Tally.ERP 9 — you don't need a different export per client.
In TallyPrime: press Alt+O or go to Gateway of Tally → Import → Vouchers, set the file type to XML, and select the file.
In Tally.ERP 9: go to Gateway of Tally → Import Data → Vouchers, then give the file path.
The posting behaviour is the same in both: deposits become Receipt vouchers, withdrawals become Payment vouchers, each against your bank ledger with the balancing side in Suspense A/c for you to reclassify afterwards. Narration is carried through in full in both versions.
One difference worth knowing: TallyPrime's period switching (Alt+F2) is more forgiving about showing you what happened after an import, so if you are troubleshooting an import that appears to do nothing, TallyPrime will usually make the cause visible faster.
